    Norm O'Neill dies

Norm O'Neill, a Wisden cricketer of the year in 1962 and a 42-Test veteran for Australia, died late on Sunday aged 71. Cricket Australia chairman Creagh O'Connor described O'Neill as a great sportsman and entertaining cricketer. "I remember him as the type of player who, at his best, won the hearts of the public through the way he played," O'Connor said. "He was great to watch when he was batting but he was also a magnificent fielder in the covers." O'Neill scored 181 in the tied Test against the West Indies at Brisbane in 1960, one of six centuries in a Test career that netted 2,779 runs at an average of 45.55 from 1958 to 1965. No cause of death was released.

    ■ SOCCER

    Australia, Mexico draw

Substitute Troy Hearfield scored in the 87th minute as Australia's under-23 soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Mexico in Oakland, California, on Sunday. In a sold-out Coliseum packed with Mexican fans, Mexico scored in the 18th minute when Australia defender Adrian Leijer deflected Edgar Castillo's crossing pass into his own goal. Mexico dominated much of the game with 18 shots to Australia's five, but Australian goalkeeper Tando Velaphi made several key saves. The biggest was an impressive stop on Cesar Villaluz, who plays for Cruz Azul, in the 58th minute. Hearfield, a recent addition to the U-23 team, came on as a midfield substitute and scored Australia's late goal on a play that began from a throw-in. The match was a tuneup for the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, which begins next Tuesday.

    India win U19 World Cup

India defeated South Africa by 12 runs on Sunday to win the under-19 World Cup in a rain-hit final. South Africa bowled out India for only 159 in 45.4 overs, but were set 116 to win in 25 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis system after heavy rain. South Africa finished at 103-8, after struggling at 11 for 3. Ajitesh Argal, Ravindra Jadeja and Siddarth Kaul got two wickets each for India. Reeza Hendricks was the top scorer for South Africa with 35 in 43 balls, and captain Wayne Parnell got 29. "Everyone complemented each other. When the batsmen failed, the bowlers came to the fore," said India captain Virat Kohli, adding that the rain was "unfortunate" for South Africa. Even before the rain started, South Africa were in trouble. Argal dismissed Pieter Malan for two runs and Rilee Rossouw without scoring.

    ■ RUGBY LEAGUE

    Australia winger shot at

Australia winger Jarryd Hayne was reportedly among three rugby league players shot at in a Sydney street during a night out in a nightclub district. New South Wales state police did not identify Hayne but confirmed yesterday that a Parramatta man told police he was walking with two friends in Kings Cross at about 4:20am yesterday when another man fired one shot at them. Kings Cross Superintendent Peter Brooks said he would not speculate on the names or occupations of the people involved, but said there might have been an altercation inside a hotel some time before the single shot was fired outside. Denis Fitzgerald, chief executive for National Rugby League club Parramatta, told Sydney radio he believed Hayne, 20, was among three players from the club involved. Fitzgerald said a group of Parramatta players attended a cricket international between Australia and India on Sunday and some went out socializing after that.
