Huxley injury casts cloud over win by ACT Brumbies

Australia Test fullback Julian Huxley was taken to hospital for scans on his neck following a third-minute tackle, and his ACT Brumbies went on to beat the Queensland Reds 43-11 in a Super 14 match yesterday.

The match was held up for about six minutes as medical staff attended to Huxley, who was knocked down while attempting a front-on tackle on James Horwill.

The Wallaby fullback convulsed on the ground as opponents Chris Latham and Morgan Turinui rushed to assist him. Medical staff worked to place Huxley on a medicab before he was slowly wheeled from the ground with his neck in a brace.

A Brumbies spokesman said Huxley suffered a head injury and was taken by ambulance to hospital for precautionary scans on his neck. There was no word on his condition late yesterday.

The ACT scored six tries to one, with lock Mark Chisolm scoring twice in the second half and Mark Gerrard, Ben Alexander, Peter Playford and Stephen Hoiles also crossing for five-pointers.

Gerrard, who took over for Huxley at fullback, converted five of the tries and also booted a penalty goal.

Meanwhile, Wycliff Palu scored the winning try and was simultaneously sin-binned as the New South Wales Waratahs beat the Otago Highlanders 15-12 at Carisbrook yesterday.

Palu's 58th-minute try allowed the Waratahs to recover from a 12-10 half-time deficit to record their second win in three matches.

But Palu went from hero to villain when, immediately after scoring his try, he punched Highlanders scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan and was shown a yellow card which forced him to spend the next 10 minutes in the sin bin.
