Luke Donald fired a six-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead after Thursday's opening round of the PGA Honda Classic.
The 30-year-old Donald holed six birdies in a bogey-free round to move one stroke ahead of fellow Brit Brian Davis, who carded a 65.
The Englishman hasn't won a USPGA event since capturing his second career title at this tournament in March 2006. His only other victory came at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in 2002.
"I didn't drive it particularly well," Donald said. "I need to improve that. I probably hit only half the fairways, which is not quite good enough."
"Apart from that, everything was very good," he said.
Donald was at two-under entering the turn on Thursday before storming through the back nine at the PGA National Resort and Spa course, birdying Nos. 10, 13, 15 and 18.
Davis recorded six straight pars after birdying his opening hole. But the Londoner also finished strong, birdying eight, 10, 13 and 16.
Looking for his first win on the PGA Tour, Davis also carded a bogey-free round.
"Any time you can make no bogeys on this golf course you've done really well," Davis said.
