Taiwan's women claim tug of war title

The Taiwanese women's tug of war team won the senior 480kg division on Sunday, their second title in the World Indoor Championships held in Faenza, Italy, Chinese Taipei Tug of War Association officials said yesterday.

Taiwan defeated semi-finalists Japan in two-straight contests to win gold, the officials said. Teams from Scotland and South Africa claimed third and fourth place.

Sunday's showing was another powerful performance after Taiwan trounced China in two straight contests to win gold in the women's senior 520kg division on Saturday.

It was the first time the Taiwanese team -- consisting of office workers from Changhua County and athletes from the Taipei Physical Education College -- won the women's senior 480kg division since the team first participated in the World Indoor Championships six years ago, the officials said.
