South Korea fought to a 1-1 draw with fierce rivals Japan yesterday to win the East Asian championship, with a little help from China's 3-1 victory over North Korea.
South Korea finished the tournament level with Japan on points and goal difference, but ahead on goals scored.
North Korea could have taken the title with a healthy win against China in yesterday's second match, but it wasn't to be.
Yeom Ki-hun scored for South Korea on 15 minutes as he flicked in a cross from Park Won-jae.
But Japan equalized on 68 minutes when Koji Yamase, who was also on target in Wednesday's ill-tempered clash with China, buried his 20m shot from a corner.
North Korea drew their first two games, while defending champions China had lost both of their earlier matches.
