Miikka Kiprusoff made 38 saves in his first shutout of the season as the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 in the NHL on Friday. Alex Tanguay scored midway through the first half for what proved to be the winner.

Kiprusoff was at his best in the third period as Detroit outshot the Flames 13-2. The Red Wings hit the post twice in the final 20 minutes of Kiprusoff's 25th-career shutout.

The Flames won their third straight and moved within one point of the Northwest Division-leading Minnesota Wild, setting up game for first place on Sunday.

Detroit dropped to 1-6-1 in its past eight games and first without All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who sprained his knee on Monday.

    Stars 5, Oilers 2

In Dallas, Jere Lehtinen scored two goals to lead the Dallas Stars over the Edmonton Oilers.

Marty Turco stopped 20 shots as the Stars completed a sweep of the four-game season series.

The Stars won for the 10th time in 12 games overall to maintain a four-point lead atop the Pacific Division.

    Avalanche 3, Coyotes 2, SO

In Glendale, Arizona, it took a record 12 rounds of a penalty shootout before Colorado found the winning shot to beat Phoenix.

Cody McLeod eventually found the net after what was the longest shootout ever for both teams.

The victory made an end to the Avalanche's five-game winless streak and kept it within two points of the Western Conference playoff places.

Phoenix's successive losses put them a point behind Colorado in the West.

    Ducks 2, Blues 1, OT

In Anaheim, California, Samuel Pahlsson scored 32 seconds into overtime to lift Anaheim over St. Louis.

It was the Ducks' eighth win in nine games, keeping the reigning champs on the tail of Dallas in the Pacific Division.

Anaheim had to rally after St. Louis took a 1-0 lead 2:17 into the third period.
