    Bayern book quarter-final berth, Bremen eliminated

    Miroslav Klose scored two goals and Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich defeated third-division Wuppertal 5-2 for a place in the German Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, while Borussia Dortmund eliminated Werder Bremen 2-1.

    Diego a penalty in the 82nd for Bremen, which trails Bayern in the Bundesliga on goal difference, but wasted another two minutes later and squandered an opportunity to tie the game.

    In other games, second-division Hoffenheim upset Hansa Rostock 2-1, while 1860 Munich overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Alemania Aachen 3-2.

    Wuppertal twice equalized in the first half but second-half goals from Daniel van Buyten, Luca Toni and Hamit Altintop secured Bayern Munich's victory.

    Klose in the 14th and 27th minutes but Wuppertal equalized each time.

    Tobias Damm in the 26th and Mahir Saglik in the 29th scored for Wuppertal.

    "After 2-2, we thought it couldn't be true," Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness said. "Then the coach said a few words in the locker room and it went better."

    Borussia Dortmund, in 10th place in the Bundesliga, led in the 19th minute against Werder Bremen when Giovanni Federico collected a pass from Mladen Petric and scored into the far corner.

    Diego Klimowicz doubled Dortmund's lead in the 80th, off a pass from Sebastian Kehl that beat the offside trap.

    But Kehl sent the game into a dramatic finish when he brought down Markus Rosenberg to create the first penalty.

    Diego, who came off the bench in the second half, beat Dortmund goalkeeper Mark Ziegler with a shot to the goalkeeper's right side.

    Two later, Rosenberg earned another penalty when he was pulled down by Martin Amedick.

    Diego the shot again and drove the ball to Ziegler's left, but Dortmund's goalkeeper read the effort and stopped the ball.

    AS ROMA INTO SEMIS

    Amantino Mancini scored in the 61st minute and defending champion AS Roma beat Sampdoria 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to the Italian Cup semi-finals.

    Mancini a series of fakes and stepovers before scoring his second goal in two games and sending Roma through on a 2-1 aggregate result. He also scored in Roma's 1-0 league win over Palermo on Saturday.

    In the semi-finals, Roma will face either Catania or Udinese, which were to play yesterday. Udinese won the first leg 3-2.

    On the other side of the draw, Lazio took a 2-1 first-leg lead to Florence yesterday and Juventus and Inter Milan resume in Turin after opening with a 2-2 draw. Sampdoria had two close chances on either side of halftime.
