Mixed doubles pair Chan Yung-jan of Taiwan and Eric Butorac of the US were knocked out of the Australian Open in Melbourne in straight sets yesterday.

The duo lost their quarter-final clash 6-1, 6-2, to No. 8 seeds Nathalie Dechy of France and Andy Ram of Israel in a one-sided encounter that lasted only 49 minutes.

Today, Taiwan's Chuang Chia-jung and Israeli Jonathan Erlich take on No. 3 seeds, China's Zi Yan and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas, in another mixed doubles quarter-final encounter. The No. 6 seeds go into the match as slight underdogs but at least they will be fresh having been granted a walkover in the previous round.

There was success for Tai-wanese players in the juniors tournament yesterday with Yang Tsung-hua beating Jared Easton of Australia 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of the boys' singles before teaming up with Hsieh-Cheng-peng to defeat British pair Daniel Cox and Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4 in the boys' doubles quarter-finals.
