Marian Hossa scored twice and the Atlanta Thrashers beat Buffalo 5-2 to extend the Sabres' longest losing streak in almost two years in the NHL on Sunday.

Buffalo, opening a three-game road trip, suffered its sixth straight loss for the first time since March of 2006.

The Sabres have made the conference finals each of the last two years but are now in danger of missing the playoffs this season.

Pascal Dupuis, Colin Stuart and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for Atlanta. Johan Hedberg made 37 stops for the Thrashers, allowing goals only to Thomas Vanek and Clarke MacArthur.

Red Wings 3, Blackhawks 1

At Chicago, Henrik Zetterberg, Dan Cleary and Mikael Samuelsson scored in the first period, and Detroit won its third successive game.

Twenty-four-year-old Jiri Hudler had two assists and the NHL-leading Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks for the first time in five matchups this season.

Canadian left winger Rene Bourque scored for the injury-depleted Blackhawks, whose losing streak reached a season-high five games.

The Red Wings killed both Chicago power-play chances and have killed 25 straight over seven games.
