Grand champion Hakuho of Mongolia defeated Chiyotaikai yesterday, moving a step closer to winning the Emperor's Cup at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
In the day's final bout at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, Hakuho improved to 12-2 when he stepped to his side and swatted ozeki Chiyotaikai down onto the dirt surface.
Chiyotaikai fell to 11-3.
Hakuho, who is bidding for his second straight Sumo title, can win it today with a victory over Kotomitsuki.
If Hakuho loses and Chiyotaikai wins his about against Kaio, the title would be decided in a playoff bout between the two.
In other major bouts, Fukuoka native Kaio overpowered fellow ozeki Kotomitsuki to improve to 8-6. Kotomitsuki dropped to 9-5.
Mongolian komusubi Ama swatted down Estonian Baruto to improve to 9-5. No. 16 maegashira Baruto lost for the second day in a row and fell to 10-4.
