Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the German first division with two goals from Luca Toni in a 3-0 win against Bavarian rival FC Nuremberg.
Bayern's victory moved them five points clear of second-placed Karlsruher SC for a record lead after nine rounds of the season.
Also on Sunday, promoted Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 behind Sotirios Kyrgiakos's two headers.
Nuremberg goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek was unable to hold Hamit Altintop's long-distance attempt in the 31st minute and Toni got to the ball to score. With nine minutes left, the Italian international headed in a corner from Ze Roberto for his second goal.
Toni tied injured teammate Miroslav Klose for the league high of eight goals this season.
Ze Roberto scored Bayern's second goal in the 40th minute on a low shot, following Bastian Schweinsteiger's backheel pass.
Hitzfeld's return to Bayern eight months ago was spoiled by Nuremberg, which routed his club 3-0 and went on to claim the German Cup.
This time, however, Bayern was in control. Bayern has won its last four games 13-1 in goals and is unbeaten with seven wins and two draws.
Nuremberg, who have lost their starting forwards to injury, fell into 17th place.
Frankfurt took the lead with Kyrgiakos's 54th minute header off a free kick as they moved into seventh place. The Greek was left unmarked as he again headed a goal for a 79th-minute winner.
Marko Ross' own goal in the 72nd leveled briefly as Leverkusen dropped into eighth place. Last week, the team was second and gave Bayern its toughest match in weeks before losing 1-0.
In other games, it was: Borussia Dortmund 2, VfL Bochum 1; VfB Stuttgart 0, Hannover 96 2; Schalke 0, Karlsruhe 2; Hertha Berlin 0, Energie Cottbus 0; Arminia Bielefeld 0, Hamburger SV 1; VfL Wolfsburg 1, Hansa Rostock 0; and MSV Duisburg 1, Werder Bremen 3.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
