Brett Favre looks to break another record

    AFP, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA
    Saturday, Sep 29, 2007, Page 19

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre is poised to rewrite the NFL record book yet again tomorrow when he takes his surprising Packers to Minnesota.

In last week's 31-24 victory over the San Diego Chargers, Favre threw three touchdown passes to match Dan Marino's all-time mark of 420.

The feat drew a congratulatory call from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Favre now seems all but certain to eclipse Marino's mark against NFC North rivals the Vikings. The only time Favre has failed to throw a touchdown pass in his past 11 trips to the Metrodome was in 1999.

Favre seems to be setting records every time he plays. Two weeks ago he surpassed Denver's John Elway to become the NFL quarterback with the most wins.

A three-time MVP, Favre should break another NFL record this weekend as he is just 10 passes shy of Marino's mark of 8,358 career attempts.

But it has been some time since the Packers have made such a strong start. One of five unbeaten teams, they are seeking their first 4-0 start in nine years.

The Packers have passed 70 percent of the time and this week should be more of the same as they will be facing the NFL's No. 1 run defense from last season.

"I would prefer to be a heavy run team, but that's just not the way we're built right now and that's not the way that gives us the best chance to score a lot of points in my opinion," Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said.

Favre said the Packers' successful start isn't due to any big changes in his own philosophy.

"Everybody's on this Brett Favre bandwagon now: `Boy, he's playing the game differently,' and all those things," Favre said. "My approach has been no different. I realize that if I make a lot of mistakes, that puts our team in jeopardy. We don't win many games when I do that."

Super Bowl champion Indianapolis, New England, Dallas and Pittsburgh will also be trying to preserve unbeaten records this week.

The Colts look to complete their third straight perfect September when they host the Denver Broncos.

Dallas try to keep rolling when they host the winless St. Louis Rams. The last time the Cowboys opened a season with four straight wins, in 1995, they went on to win the Super Bowl.

The Steelers take their quest for a fourth straight victory on the road when they visit the Arizona Cardinals, while the New England Patriots, who have scored 38 points in each of their first three victories, will try to keep their offense powered up when they visit the Cincinnati Bengals.

Miami, Atlanta and Buffalo, like St. Louis, will be gunning for their first victories of the season.

The Dolphins host Oakland, with Raiders quarterback Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro-Bowler, making a return to Miami where he played in just four games for the Dolphins last season.

The Atlanta Falcons will also get a glimpse of a quarterback they decided they could do without as Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans come to town.

The banged-up Buffalo Bills will host the New York Jets in the AFC East.

In other games this week, Cleveland host Baltimore, Detroit host Chicago, Seattle host San Francisco, Carolina host Tampa Bay, San Diego host Kansas City, and the New York Giants host Philadelphia in an NFC East duel.
