Taiwanese tennis players Chan Yung-jan (¸âµúµM) and Chuang Chia-jung (²ø¨Î®e) made history on Tuesday by advancing to the US Open women's doubles semi-finals in New York.

The fifth-seeded Chan and Chuang defeated No. 16 seeds Bethanie Mattek of the US and Sania Mirza of India 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to become the first Taiwanese pair ever to advance to the last four in the women's doubles at the grand slam event.

The Taiwanese duo were due to play Agnes Szavay of Hungary and Vladimira Uhlirova of the Czech Republic, probably this morning, for a place in the final.

Chan, 18, and Chuang, 22, dubbed the "Hope of Taiwan" by the local press, have won prize money of US$100,000 so far. They stand to win US$400,000 if they win the title and US$200,000 should they lose in the final.

The pair have been on a roll since winning the silver medal at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, last November.

In January, they made it to the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne, where they lost in three sets to Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Liezel Huber of South Africa. Despite their defeat it was the best-ever performance by Taiwanese players at a grand slam event.
