    Posey receives suspension
Boston Celtics forward James Posey on Friday was suspended without pay for one game by the NBA after pleading no contest to reckless driving in Florida. Posey will serve his suspension when the Celtics open the regular season against the Washington Wizards at home on Nov. 2. The reckless driving charge came in connection with an incident in April on Miami Beach, Florida. Posey was originally arrested on drunken-driving charges after police pulled him over and he refused to take a breath test. He eventually pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of reckless driving.

    Eto'o undergoes surgery
Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o underwent surgery on the thigh injury he picked up during the week. The operation was scheduled for yesterday morning, the Barcelona said on their Web site. Eto'o suffered a partial tear of a tendon in his right thigh two minutes after coming on as a substitute in Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Gamper Trophy. On Thursday, the club said they expected Eto'o to be sidelined for at least two months. The three-time African Player of the Year missed a large chunk of last season after injuring his right knee during a Champions League match against Werder Bremen in September last year.

    Howlett to join Munster
All Blacks winger Doug Howlett is to join Irish club Munster after this year's World Cup, the New Zealand Rugby Union said in a statement yesterday. The 28-year-old, who has scored 43 tries in 59 Tests since making his international debut in 2000, has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract starting in January. "I have had an amazing rugby career in New Zealand and I am grateful to every person who has contributed to that," Howlett said on the Munster Web site. "I consider Munster a fantastic opportunity to experience a different lifestyle with my family."

    Seol moves to Fulham
South Korean midfielder Seol Ki-Hyeon, who had played for Reading in the Premier League, signed a three-year deal with league rival Fulham, the two clubs said yesterday. Fulham confirmed "the signing of Seol Ki-Hyeon from Reading Football Club, in a three-year deal which sees Liam Rosenior depart for the Madjeski Stadium," Fulham said on its Web site. "Seol has many of the attributes that I look for in a player; he is strong and tenacious and is prepared to work hard to create opportunities for himself and the team. He is very good in the air but he will also close down opposition defenders," Fulham director Lawrie Sanchez said.

    Muralitharan may play
Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan could still play in the inaugural World Twenty20 Championship despite earlier being ruled out of the tournament because of an injury. Muralitharan injured his right elbow while bowling for Lancashire against Kent on Wednesday in the English county championship, but no decision will be made on his participation in the South Africa event until he returns to Sri Lanka with scans of his injury. "It's better news than it could have been, but it's up to Sri Lanka to assess it," Lancashire, England, physical therapist Sam Byrne said. "We got the results back and it is just showing some inflammation around the bicep."
