`Golden Warrior' helps Elephants to snap losing streak

Chen "the Golden Warrior" Chih-yuan homered and drove in six runs to tie a career-high for most RBIs in a single game as the Brother Elephants snapped a three-game losing skid by topping the La New Bears 9-6 in Hsinchu on Wednesday evening.

After a lengthy rehab following a shoulder operation in the US earlier this season, the outspoken Brother outfielder returned to action with a big splash by going 4-for-5 with a half-dozen RBIs in his second start of the season to rescue his club from its recent slide.

"I am glad I can contribute right away, especially after the long break from action," Chen said after the game in which he was unanimously voted the MVP.?

It was his two-run double off Bears reliever Suzuki Makoto that broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the tenth to pave the way for the Elephants victory.

The Elephants opened the game with five quick runs over the first three innings to chase Bears starter Hsu Wen-hsiung, thanks to a second-inning homer and a third-inning single with two RBIs apiece by the Golden Warrior.

Even though the Bears would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third on Raul Gonzalez's two-run double and Chen Chin-fong's RBI single off Elephants starter David Manning to cut the deficit down to 5-3, the men in the golden uniform would tack on another run in the fourth to lead it 6-3.

After reliever Wu Bao-shien's wild pitch with bases loaded that scored the Bears' fourth run of the game, it was Lin Chih-sheng's two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh that forced a 6-6 tie which lasted until the tenth to set the stage for Chen's game-winning double.

Todd Moser was credited with the win for the Elephants with three hitless innings of solid relief, improving his record to 3-0 for the year by outlasting his counterpart Suzuki, who entered in the eighth with one out and men on first and third and miraculously escaped unharmed before running into trouble in the tenth to lose his first game of the year.

    Whales 0, Cobras 10

The Macoto Cobras avenged a 6-0 shutout loss to the Chinatrust Whales on Tuesday with a 10-0 win in Sinjhuang on Wednesday to salvage a one-game split in their two-game series.

The win also ended a five-game losing skid for the Cobras, who had dropped nine of their past eleven before Wednesday to fall to fifth place in the standings.

Kuo Ming-ren led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and scored two batters later on Wang Chuan-jia's liner to center to give the Cobras a 1-0 lead that they added to in the fourth with Lin "Wild Hog" Hong-yuan's solo homer before blowing the game wide open at 6-0 with a four-run fifth.

The onslaught continued in the seventh after a scoreless sixth as the Cobras struck for two more runs on Deng Shih-yang's two-run homer before an error by the Whales shortstop allowed the final two runs in the eighth to conclude the scoring.

Taking no chances, the Cobras went for the kill in the seventh by scoring twice more.

Picking up the win for the Cobras was starter Chen JIa-hong who stayed undefeated for the year at 4-0 with six scoreless innings on four-hit ball before his bullpen stepped in with three innings of solid relief to keep the shutout intact.

Pocketing the loss for the Whales was starter Su Tseh-yi who allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings to settle for his third loss of the year.
