Goals from Stanislav Sestak and Daniel Imhof handed VfL Bochum provisional top spot in the Bundesliga on Friday with a 2-1 victory over ten-man SV Hamburg.
Slovak international striker Sestak took advantage of major errors in the Hamburg defense to put the hosts ahead just before the halftime whistle and Imhof sealed victory with a long shot after 83 minutes.
Hamburg skipper Rafael van der Vaart, who this week committed to the club amid speculation he was bound for Valencia, led the fightback but the visitors faced an uphill battle after Vincent Kompany was sent off after 60 minutes.
Van der Vaart converted a penalty after 86 minutes but it was not enough.
