    Rangers start with a win

    Captain Barry Ferguson scored twice on Saturday to help Rangers kick off the Scottish league season with a 3-0 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

    Ferguson scored first in the 16th minute with a left-footed volley from 20m. Substitute forward Nacho Novo added the second goal in the 64th minute with a powerful shot from just inside the box.

    Ferguson scored again in the 90th with a lob over Inverness goalkeeper Michael Fraser.

    "It was a pleasing 90 minutes for us in the sense that Caley Thistle have been very awkward opponents for the last couple of seasons," Rangers manager Walter Smith said. "It was a good result for us and we're pleased we managed to get the win. The main aspect is that we actually played quite well in the game."

    US winger DaMarcus Beasley made his Rangers debut and had a chance to score in the third minute.

    Other Scottish Premier League results on Saturday:

    * Dundee United 1, Aberdeen 0

    * Gretna 0, Falkirk 4

    * St. Mirren 0, Motherwell 1
