Lewine Mair, the author of the book One Hundred Years of Women's Golf and a golf correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, said: "I would say the label attached to lady golfers in the Isles is that they're second best. And that it's the lesser option, the women's game."
The crowds that followed 17-year-old Michelle Wie during her pro-am round on Wednesday are another sign that the times are changing, Mair said.
"You talk to people here now who want to see Michelle Wie as much as they want to see Tiger Woods," she said.
