    China menaces Taiwan

China pulled even with Taiwan yesterday during the second round of the Straits Cup golf tournament in Taoyuan County, tying the overall score at 6-6 after four of its six pairs beat their Taiwanese opponents.

China's strong performance not only puts Taiwan's quest for its 10th consecutive tournament victory in jeopardy, but also marks the most rounds China has ever won on a single day.

Taiwan took the lead in the first round on Wednesday by winning four of the six matches, with each pair consisting of two golfers from each country playing their own ball. The teams remained the same for yesterday's round, but with the two golfers in each pair sharing a ball.

After winning their matches on the first day, the pairs of Lu Wei-lan (呂偉嵐) and Lu Wei-chih (呂偉智), who are brothers, and Chan Yi-hsin (詹益信) and Chen Tsung-cheng (陳宗成) were the only Taiwanese teams to emerge victorious from yesterday's round.

The tournament will end with the singles round today, with individual matchups among the 12 golfers on each team. This is the first time that the two teams have ever been tied going into the final round.

Play will begin at 9am at Chang Gung Golf Club in Taoyuan County, and admission is free.
