Twelve fans die in stampede following Zambian match

At least 12 fans were crushed to death as they were rushing out of the stadium gates after Zambia's 3-0 victory over Congo in an African Cup qualifier, official media said yesterday.

The state-owned Sunday Times said that five more fans were hospitalized after the accident on Saturday at Konkola Stadium in the northern town of Chililabonbe in Zambia's Copperbelt province.

The newspaper said the pressure from spectators wanting to leave the stadium overpowered those at the gate. Three women and nine men were killed, all of them Zambian team supporters.

The fans were in a rush to leave because the match started an hour late because a referee arrived late.
