    Taiwan Sports Wrap

    Top two out in Paris

Two of Taiwan's top hopes at the French Open have been knocked out of the singles tournament, with Chan Yung-jan (詹詠然) losing to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva yesterday in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6.

Chan's loss came a day after Taiwan's only male entrant in the tournament, Lu Yen-hsun (盧彥勳), was eliminated in the first round when he lost to Denmark's Kristian Pless 3-6, 2-6, 6-7.

The two eliminations put Taiwan's remaining hopes for a singles champion squarely on the shoulders of Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇), who is playing in the tournament thanks to a strong showing in the qualifying round. Hsieh was scheduled to play Argentina's Gisela Dulko yesterday evening.

    Council changes name

The National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports announced yesterday that it had changed its English title to the "Sports Affairs Council." Its Chinese title (行政院體育委員會) will remain the same.

Officials said the purpose of the change was to make it easier to understand the organization's purpose and duties, and that the change would be effective immediately.

The council also announced that its Department of Public Sports (全民運動處) would be renamed the Department of Sports for All.
