Jones quits as Queensland Reds coach

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has resigned as coach of the Queensland Reds after his team finished last in Super 14 rugby this season.

Jones will leave the Reds later this year after his resignation was accepted by Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) chairman Peter Lewis.

Jones, who initially signed a three-year contract with the QRU after being fired as Wallabies coach in late 2005, had only committed to continuing through the next Super 14 season.

He will continue in the coaching role to assist with a post-season review and the orderly transition to a new head coach.

"This is a regrettable but amicable parting of the ways," Lewis said.

"Eddie's family is relocating to the UK and, while he had initially announced his intention to coach the Reds in 2008, he decided that it was in Queensland rugby's best interests to recruit a successor now rather than endure 12 months of instability and speculation."

Wallabies assistant Michael Foley, Auckland-based Blues mentor David Nucifora and former Wallabies five-eighth Pat Howard are among the leading candidates for the job.
