Taiwan taekwondo athlete Sung Yu-chi won a gold medal on Saturday at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championships, which opened in Beijing on Friday.
Sung won the gold in the men's lightweight division by beating his rival from Afghanistan in the final round of competition.
After winning the gold, Sung attributed his success to his father, coach Sung Ching-hung, who accompanied him to Beijing for the world championships.
Fast track
The championships are considered to offer a fast track ticket to next year's Olympic Games taekwondo shortlist.
Yesterday, Chu Mu-yen, who won a gold medal in the men's taekwondo 58kg competition at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, beat his Slovenian rival, surnamed Sadrlja, 5-1 in the men's 58kg division.
Round of 16
Chu's victory over Sadrlja sent him on to the round of 16 at the championships.
Chu later defeated a Malian opponent 7-3 in the afternoon.
Yesterday, however, Chu had his run at the championship cut short after he gained success in early rounds.
Chu missed a golden opportunity for a medal when he fell to his Spanish opponent in the quarter-finals.
Women's division
In the women's 51kg division, Wu Yen-ni also got off to a promising start, beating her Chinese opponent Wu Jing to advance to the quarter-finals.
But she also ran into a tough Spanish competitor in that round and was eliminated from the tournament at the same time as Chu.
