The West Indies fought back to reach 363-7 at stumps on Saturday on day three of the first test at Lord's to trail England by 190 runs after Monty Panesar had taken four wickets.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored 63 not out from 161 balls, putting on stands of 92 with Dwayne Bravo (56) and 83 with Denesh Ramdin (60) to rebuild the innings after Panesar had taken 4-33 at one stage.
Panesar bowled Devon Smith (21) with his first ball just before lunch, and had Daren Ganga (49), Ramnaresh Sarwan (35) and Runaka Morton (14) out in identical leg-before-wicket decisions afterward.
The last England spinner to take five wickets at Lord's was Ashley Giles, who had 5-81 against the West Indies in July 2004, but Panesar couldn't take a fifth in 17 overs after dismissing Morton.
He finished with 4-102 from 31 overs -- bowling 29 straight to carry the attack because Matthew Hoggard didn't return after leaving the field in the first session due to a strained abductor muscle.
"I probably didn't expect as many overs as I did today but I always enjoy bowling," Panesar said. "It was a good test for me, bowling on a wicket that doesn't turn as much."
England captain Andrew Strauss had declared before the start of play on 553-5, and opening batsmen Chris Gayle and Ganga started carefully until Gayle hit Hoggard for consecutive fours.
Hoggard was replaced by Liam Plunkett in the 13th over, and within two balls Gayle was bowled by a seaming yorker that hit offstump to leave the West Indies on 38-1.
Panesar came on in the 27th over, with lunch imminent, and immediately got the breakthrough.
Smith played inside Panesar's first ball which didn't deviate and was bowled to end a 45-run stand with Ganga. The West Indies added 14 more runs to go to lunch on 97-2.
Panesar had Sarwan lbw for 35, despite pushing forward, with a ball that went straight on to make it 151-3 in the 41st over -- and then dismissed Ganga in similar fashion 14 runs later.
Panesar had his fourth wicket in the 53rd over with a similar lbw decision. It hit Morton above his pad's knee-roll to leave the West Indies on 187-5.
