"He played perfectly. I couldn't get into any rallies. I couldn't play like I wanted to, that's the most disappointing thing," Volandri said.

"But I beat the No. 1 player and two players in the top 15, I've got nothing to be ashamed about. It's been a fantastic week," he said.

Gonzalez won 79 percent of the points when he got his first serve in and converted all four of his break points.

Svetlana Kuznetsova reached the final of the German Open by beating three-time champion Justine Henin 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 yesterday.

Third-seeded Kuznetsova was due step on court again later yesterday to play 12th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the final of the key French Open tuneup.

In a match carried over a day because of rain, Henin's serve was broken in the final game when she double-faulted, then mishit a backhand against Kuznetsova.

Downpours stopped the match on Saturday, when top-seeded Henin played two opponents for the second straight day.

"This was the toughest week I ever had -- it's been bizarre," Henin said.

"It was very hard mentally, physically. Today I was missing some energy, some legs on the court," she said.

Henin lost for just the second time in 16 meetings with the fourth-ranked Russian, who is looking for her first title this year. Henin beat Kuznetsova in last year's French Open final.

Henin, who had reached four straight finals, will now take a two-week break before the French Open, at Roland Garros in Paris, which starts on May 27.

The top-ranked Belgian said she felt good about her game heading into the grand slam.

"I'm glad because I had good preparation here with a lot of matches against top players, which is good for the French [Open]," Henin said.

On Saturday, Henin beat sixth-ranked Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in three sets, charging back from 4-0 down in the final set.

She returned to the court and was trailing Kuznetsova, 6-4, 5-7, 3-2 when the downpours began once again.
