Longtime vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan will lead the West Indies on their tour of England this month following the retirement of Brian Lara.
Sarwan was nominated as captain ahead of fellow batsman Daren Ganga by the national selectors, and ratified by the West Indies Cricket Board.
"I think the selectors felt that his knowledge of the game [went in his favor]," chief executive Bruce Aanensen said on the WICB Web site on Tuesday. "They also felt that the opportunities he had to lead the team on the field, they were very impressed with that. [He also] has the respect of the players."
Sarwan, the 26-year-old captain of Guyana, has played 65 tests and 124 one-day internationals since his debut in 2000. He captained West Indies in four one-dayers in 2004 for a 3-1 record.
Sarwan was scheduled to meet with the selectors in Antigua to name a team for the tour yesterday. The team is scheduled to leave next Tuesday, although it remained also without a coach. Coach Bennett King resigned following the World Cup.
West Indies is scheduled to play four tests at Lord's, Headingley, Old Trafford and Riverside Ground, three ODIs, and two Twenty20s.
