    Taiwanese duo score wins

Taiwan scored a double victory at the the Asian Junior Tennis Championship in Changhua County's Yuanlin Township (員林) on Sunday when it took first in both men's and women's singles competitions.

In his last year of eligibility as a junior, Peng Hsien-lin (彭賢林) went into the final match against his South Korean opponent ranked 23rd in the world and first in Asia. After a grinding first set, Peng took advantage of several mistakes by his opponent to put away the following sets easily and win the match 7-5, 6-1,6-1.

Chang Kai-chen (張凱貞) looked as if she would cruise to victory after pulling ahead of her Thai opponent in the first set with an easy 6-2 win. But she injured her hand in the second set and her opponent took full advantage to win it 2-6. Chang had massage treatment while resting between the second and third set, and settled herself to take the final set 6-2.

    Going for gold

The National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is preparing for the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung by drawing up a plan to help with athlete training. It has identified tug of war, power lifting, roller skating, bowling, pool and korfball as sports that Taiwan has a good chance of taking gold in.

The council has emphasized that the events at the competition are alternative sports not included in the Olympics, most of which derive from European leisure activities. It said that they don't require much equipment or training to play and hopes this will attract more Taiwanese to participate in the sports.
