Tonight is Ice Night

The Chinese Taipei Ice Hockey League is holding its second annual Ice Night tomorrow beginning at 7pm at the Taipei Arena.

Organizers hope to build on the success of last year's event by showcasing three league games. Fans will be able to watch the matches, which begin at 7:30pm with a game between the Tigers and the Lions, and participate in various interactive games with prizes up for grabs. Refreshments will be available, admission is free and all proceeds will be put towards the growth of ice hockey in Taiwan. More information about the league can be found at www.cihl.com.tw.

Chan to face Sharapova

Taiwanese tennis star Chan Yung-jan (詹詠然) is set to face first-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida.

Chan easily defeated her first round Spanish opponent, Nuria Llagostera Vives, on Thursday. After a four-hour rain delay, the 19-year-old Chan made short work of Vives, needing just one hour and 24 minutes to take the win in straight sets: 6-2, 6-3.

She and partner Chuang Chia-jung (莊佳容) are seeded eighth in the women's doubles, are are scheduled to play Elini Daniilidou of Greece and Jasmin Woehr of Germany in the first round.

Taiwan team excels

The Taiwanese team participating at the World Police and Fire Games in Adelaide, Australia, have now earned more medals than any other team since Taiwan began participating in the competition in 1999.

Various Taiwanese police, fire and SWAT teams have accumulated 14 gold medals, 10 silvers and three bronzes over eight days of competition.
