Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich fired coach Felix Magath on Wednesday and brought back his predecessor Ottmar Hitzfeld, who guided the club to the Champions League title in 2001.
"We regret this step. Felix Magath did a very good job in the last two and a half years in Bayern, with great success, especially the two doubles," club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement. "But we, as those responsible for the club, had to react to the current developments. Concern about qualifying for next season's Champions League led us to reach today's decision."
Magath won the Bundesliga championship and the German Cup with Bayern in his first two seasons with Germany's biggest club.

But his third season has been troubled. The team lost at Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at the start of the second half of the season on Friday and dropped to fourth place in the standings after drawing 0-0 with lowly Bochum at home on Tuesday.
Only the two Bundesliga teams earn automatic berths in the lucrative Champions League, with the third going into qualifying.
"The Champions League is very important for our image and for our finances. We felt that with Ottmar Hitzfeld in charge until the end of the season we can achieve this goal," Rummenigge said.

Bayern are five points behind leaders Werder Bremen and Schalke and after drawing with Bochum, Magath said the title was all but gone. The team have already lost five games this season and have been eliminated from the German Cup.
"Of course this is not a pleasant situation," Magath said. "I had two and a half beautiful and successful years in Bayern, of which I can be proud. But I always knew that this was not forever."
This season, Bayern appeared unable to compensate for the departure of Germany captain Michael Ballack to Chelsea, then lost another midfielder, Sebastian Deisler, who decided to retire during the winter break after a string of injuries.
Under Magath, Bayern reached the knockout stage of the Champions League this season and play Real Madrid next month.
Hitzfeld will return to the club until the end of the season and will bring back his former assistant, Michael Henke, who had a brief and unsuccessful stint as head coach at Kaiserslautern.
Hitzfeld led the club to the Champions League title in 2001. He also won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund in 1997.
Under Hitzfeld, Bayern won four Bundesliga titles and three German Cups between 1998 and 2004. With 16 titles with different clubs, Hitzfeld is Germany's most successful coach.
Magath was the second Bundesliga coach to go on Wednesday, following the resignation of Jupp Heynckes from Borussia Moenchengladbach. They were followed by Thomas Doll who was fired by Hamburg.
Werder, Schalke win
Werder Bremen and Schalke moved eight points clear of Bayern Munich with victories in the Bundesliga on Wednesday.
Bremen won 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, who finished with 10 men, and Schalke beat Alemannia Aachen 2-1 at home.
Both teams, who meet on Sunday, improved to 42 points, with Bremen ahead on goal difference.
Stuttgart beat Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday to improve to 35 points and move past Bayern (34) into third place.
Bremen and Schalke both took advantage of Bayern's slump with routine victories.
Bremen led in the 15th minute when Miroslav Klose headed in his 10th goal of the season at the far post, and Hugo Almeida fired in a sharp, low left-footed shot in the 78th, after Leverkusen's Gonzalo Castro had been ejected for a foul on Tim Borowski.
Schalke rallied to edge Aachen, who took a 17th minute lead courtesy of Vedad Ibisevic.
But Rafinha's penalty six minutes later and Aachen captain Moses Sichone's own-goal in the 74th gave Schalke the victory.
In another game, Hamburger SV played to its 12th draw of the season, 1-1 at home to Energie Cottbus, and fell to the bottom of the standings. Hamburg have won only once in 19 games.
Juan Pablo Sorin started the ball rolling for Hamburg by converting a fourth-minute penalty. But Sergiu Radu equalized after a lucky bounce and Hamburg never recovered, although Colin Benjamin hit the post one minute later.
Hannover got two goals from Brazilian Vinicius in the first 37 minutes and another from fellow defender Frank Fahrenhorst before Jan Rosenthal and Altin Lala completed a 5-0 rout of Hertha Berlin.
Leon Andreasen, who transferred to Mainz from Bremen during the winter break, gave his new team their second consecutive victory by converting a penalty in the 61st against Borussia Dortmund. The win moved Mainz off the bottom of the table.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
