Former South Africa rugby winger Gerrie Germishuys was in a stable condition in hospital on Monday after being shot three times during a weekend robbery at his home.
"He is still in the trauma ICU, but he is more stable than he was," Milpark Hospital spokeswoman Amelda Swartz told the South African Press Association.
The 57-year-old Germishuys was hit in the right hand and cheek, and a bullet was still lodged in his neck. Swartz said the bullet would be removed when the swelling was down.
He will also need surgery on a finger on his right hand.
Germishuys' jaw was wired, and he was still heavily sedated and on a ventilator.
Robbers overpowered him and his wife in their home in Northcliff, Johannesburg on Saturday. When one of the attackers tried to tie up the pair, Germishuys wrestled with the man and was shot three times. The attackers escaped.
Germishuys scored a then-record 12 tries in 20 Tests for the Springboks from 1974-1981.
David Lyons injured
Wallaby back-rower David Lyons' record run of consecutive Super rugby matches for the New South Wales Waratahs will end at 83 following knee injury, the Waratahs said yesterday.
The No. 8 will miss the opening three matches of the Super 14 season following arthroscopy on his after Australia's European tour, a spokesman said.
"Unfortunately, [Lyons] developed a rare stress fracture complication. But he's accepted the news and is focusing on a comeback in our first home game against the Western Force on March 2," head coach Ewen McKenzie said in a statement.
