Toulouse overcome cold to avoid third straight defeat

Toulouse bounced back from their shock European Cup elimination to beat defending French champions Biarritz 21-16 in freezing conditions on Saturday.

Triple continental champions Toulouse lost back-to-back matches against Llanelli in the European Cup and were in serious danger of another morale-sapping defeat on Saturday when they went into the break 13-6 behind.

Biarritz's veteran French international flanker Serge Betsen scored the first and only try of the match after 10 minutes which was successfully converted by Dimitri Yachvili.

Yachvili also hit two first half penalties compared to one by Jean-Baptiste Elissalde.

A 13th-minute drop goal from Jean-Frederic Dubois kept Toulouse in touch.

Elissalde kicked two penalties while Yachvili was on target with his third of the game early in the second half as Toulouse closed the gap to four points.

The win kept Toulouse in fifth place in the table.

Clermont remain second, six points off the pace, after seeing off Montpellier 31-18 while Perpignan, who defeated Bayonne 36-30, are third, 10 points behind the leaders.
