"All year long we've had guys who picked each other up," general manager Omar Minaya said. "I'm confident somebody will pick up El Duque."
In the absence of Martinez, Cuban-born Hernandez was slated to start their playoffs opener. But El Duque got hurt on Tuesday and a MRI revealed he sustained a Grade 2 tear in his calf.
Hernandez has been one of the best postseason pitchers in MLB history, going 9-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 19 games, including 14 starts, mostly with the New York Yankees.
