Former Massachusetts governor Edward King, who once played professional football for the Buffalo Bills, died on Monday after undergoing brain surgery following a fall at his family home. He was 81.

"The people of Massachusetts have lost a friend," Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said in a statement.

King, a conservative Democrat who froze property taxes and reduced state spending on social programs, beat incumbent Governor Michael Dukakis in the 1978 Democratic primary and went on to win the general election and serve one four-year term.

He played guard with Buffalo Bills in the All-America Football Conference from 1948 to 1949 and with the Baltimore Colts in the NFL in 1950.
