Pedersen triumphs in Tour
Martin Pedersen of Denmark won the Tour of Britain on Sunday, while Tom Boonen of Belgium won the 82km sixth stage. Luis Pasamontes was second overall, followed by Filippo Pozzato. Boonen won the final stage in 2 hours, 41 seconds, with Pedersen finishing in the main pack with the same time. The final stage was marred by a collision on The Mall, in central London, involving two motorcyclists accompanying the riders. The London Ambulance Service said five people -- including the motorcyclists -- were injured with head wounds and fractured ankles. No further details were immediately available. The tour began in Glasgow, Scotland, last Tuesday.

Kwambai wins marathon
Kenyan James Kwambai took control at the 14km mark and built a commanding lead to win the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Virgina Beach, Virginia, on Sunday. Kwambai, last year's runner-up, covered the 21km course in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 30 seconds to beat countryman Evans Cheruiyot by 19 seconds. Kenyans captured the first seven places and eight of the top 10 in the men's race. Edna Kiplagat, also from Kenya, won the women's race in 1:11:08. She finished 30 seconds ahead of fellow Kenyan Alice Chelangat. Kwambai learned a lesson from last year, when he began his finishing kick too early and faded, barely hanging on for second. This time he held the final burst longer and turned away Cheruiyot's challenge. About 20,000 runners and walkers participated in the race.

McGrath, Gilchrist in squad
Veteran paceman Glenn McGrath and vice captain Adam Gilchrist were included yesterday in Australia's 14-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy next month in India. McGrath has not played since January, missing series in South Africa and Bangladesh to spend time with his wife when she was treated for cancer. Gilchrist was rested from Australia's squad for the tri-series in Malaysia against India and West Indies later this month, a warmup for the Champions Trophy. Australia is ranked No. 1 in test and limited-overs cricket and has won the World Cup three times, but never succeeded at this tournament. "Australia has been successful in one-day internationals for a long time but we haven't won the ICC Champions Trophy and we've picked a side that we believe is capable of winning it," chief selector Andrew Hilditch said. "We've decided that the best way for Glenn to make his way back into international cricket is to play international cricket -- the combination of the Malaysian tri-series and the Champions Trophy is ideal preparation for what will be a huge summer of cricket for Glenn in Australia and overseas."

Russia take the cup
Russia scored three early goals and held on to edge the Czech Republic 4-3 on Sunday to win the Ceska Pojistovna Cup, the opening event on the European Hockey Tour. Russia, the defending champion, finished the four-team tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. Finland, which edged Olympic champion Sweden 3-2, was second. Sweden was third and the Czechs fourth. Alexander Popov, Denis Tyurin, Alexey Simakov gave Russia a 3-0 lead after the first two periods. The Czechs got back into the game by cutting the deficit to 3-2 early in the third, but Vitaly Proshkin then made it 4-2 midway through the third.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
