Ryan Howard tied Philadelphia's single-season record with his major league-leading 48th home run on Tuesday, helping the Phillies to a 10-6 win over the Washington Nationals.

Howard hit a three-run shot in the sixth inning off reliever Kevin Gryboski, equaling the franchise mark set by Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt in 1980.

Brett Myers (10-6) allowed three runs in six innings for the Phillies. Mike Lieberthal hit a two-run homer off Nationals starter Tony Armas (8-10), and Jimmy Rollins and Abraham Nunez had three hits apiece.

Howard leads the majors with 125 RBIs.

    Pirates 7, Cubs 6, 11 innings

At Pittsburgh, Jose Bautista's bases-loaded walk scored Jose Castillo to cap a two-run, 11th-inning rally, and Pittsburgh handed Chicago its fifth consecutive loss.

Derrek Lee's RBI single gave the Cubs a 6-5 lead in the top of the inning, but closer Ryan Dempster (1-6) couldn't protect it.

Xavier Nady had three hits and scored two runs for Pittsburgh (52-81), which avoided clinching its 14th consecutive losing season.

At Atlanta, Barry Bonds hit two homers for in a game for the first time since 2004 but that didn't wasn't enough to keep Atlanta from its longest home winning streak in more than three months.

Bonds hit a pair of drives over the center-field wall, giving him 727 homers for his career. But Andruw Jones went deep twice, Chipper Jones and Adam LaRoche also homered to beat San Francisco.

The Braves have won three straight at Turner Field -- their longest home streak since a season-best four in a row from May 15-18. Tim Hudson (11-10) got the win.

Shea Hillenbrand and Bonds had back-to-back homers in the first inning. Bonds added a two-run shot in the sixth, his 19th homer.

    Astros 10, Brewers 3

At Houston, pinch-hitter Jason Lane hit a grand slam during Houston's seven-run eighth inning, and Houston trounced Milwaukee to match a season high with its fourth straight victory.

Houston's Willy Taveras went 0-for-3, ending his hitting streak at 30 games -- the second-longest in the majors this season behind Chase Utley's 35-game run for Philadelphia. Taveras' hitting streak is the longest in Astros history, surpassing Jeff Kent's 25-game streak in 2004.

    Marlins 9, Cardinals 1

At St. Louis, Dan Uggla homered and drove in four runs, and Hanley Ramirez was a home run shy of the cycle for Florida, which won its ninth straight by beating up Mark Mulder and St. Louis.

Mulder (6-7) lasted only 1 2-3 innings, matching the shortest outing of his career. He gave up five runs on six hits in his second start since returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for more than two months.

    Mets 10, Rockies 5

At Denver, Carlos Beltran set a career high with his 39th homer, Jose Reyes also connected and David Wright drove in three runs, sending surging New York over Colorado.

Steve Trachsel improved to 12-1 in 15 starts since June 9. The Mets won for the 10th time in 11 games, maintaining their 15.5-game lead in the National League East.

Kim Byung-hyun (7-10) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings, losing his fourth straight decision.

    Padres 8, Diamondbacks 3

At Phoenix, Mike Piazza and Geoff Blum homered in support of Chris Young, who gave up three hits over seven innings in San Diego's victory against Arizona.

Josh Barfield and Russell Branyan added RBI singles for the Padres, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

    Dodgers 6, Reds 5, 16 innings

At Los Angeles, Ramon Martinez homered leading off the 16th inning, Jeff Kent went 4-for-7 with a home run and Los Angeles knocked Cincinnati out of the NL wild-card lead.

It's the first time since June 13 that the Reds don't have at least a share of the lead in the wild-card race, which San Diego leads by a half-game over Cincinnati and Philadelphia. The Reds remain 3.5 games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

    American League

C.C. Sabathia pitched his major league-leading fifth complete game and Travis Hafner hit his 40th homer, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 on Tuesday.

Sabathia (10-8) allowed two runs and four hits as he worked at least seven innings for the 10th time in 11 starts since July 7. The left-hander struck out six without a walk to earn consecutive victories for the first time since winning three in a row from May 19-30.

    Royals 2, Twins 0

At Minneapolis, Mark Redman threw a five-hitter to win for the first time in seven starts and John Buck hit an RBI double to lead Kansas City past Minnesota.

    Rangers 9, Orioles 4

At Arlington, Texas, Kevin Millwood allowed eight hits in his second complete game of the season and Mark Teixeira hit a tiebreaking homer, leading Texas over Baltimore.

White Sox 12, Devil Rays 9

At Chicago, Jermaine Dye homered and drove in four runs, and Joe Crede tied a career-high with four hits to lead Chicago over Tampa Bay.

Crede also drove in two runs to help the White Sox move one-half game ahead of Minnesota in the AL wild-card race.
