Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, making perhaps his final start for the Cubs at Wrigley Field, made it quite a farewell.
Maddux's outstanding performance helped the Cubs continue their domination of the St Louis Cardinals with a 4-2 victory.
The subject of numerous trade rumors, Maddux is likely to be dealt by the fifth-place Cubs before baseball's trade deadline today.
The scouts in attendance certainly had to be impressed with what they saw on Saturday as the four-time Cy Young Award winner enjoyed one of his finest starts of the season.
The 40-year-old righthander allowed only one run and five hits in six-plus innings en route to posting consecutive wins for the first time since April. He struck out six and did not issue a walk, throwing 63 of 84 pitches for strikes.
"I felt pretty good on the mound and the team played a good game behind me," said Maddux, who tied John Clarkson (327) for 11th place on the all-time wins list.
