In the middle of a series that could define his legacy, as coach and as team president, Riley seemed to find comfort in the numbers -- rolled up in collated spreadsheets in his hands. And he found enjoyment when recalling the old days of video scouting.
He did not want to be interrupted while he told how Bill Bertka, an assistant coach when Riley played for the Lakers, used to splice 35mm game film, hang it vertically in his home, then throw in a few nonrelated basketball pictures to see if the players were paying attention.
