Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday to stay on course for a Champions League berth next season, while Sunderland's struggle to stay in the Premier League was paused when its game with Fulham was abandoned.
Spurs went 2-0 up with goals from Paul Stalteri and Michael Carrick in the 44th and 49th minutes respectively, and Manchester City goalkeeper David James made three key saves to keep out Robbie Keane and Michael Carrick.
Georgios Samaras pulled a goal back for City in the 52nd.
Spurs has 58 points in fourth place -- the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Charlton and Everton drew 0-0, Wigan and Birmingham tied 1-1 and Blackburn kept up its chances of sneaking into fourth place with a 2-2 draw with relegation-threatened Portsmouth. Blackburn has 54 points -- one more than Arsenal, which dropped down to sixth.
However, Arsenal plays Villarreal in the Champions League semifinals later this month and if it wins the tournament and finishes fifth or lower, fourth place in the Premier League will only earn a UEFA Cup berth. Arsenal plays at Manchester United on Sunday.
"If Arsenal win all their games then maybe we could have a problem but we don't focus on other teams, we will see what we do between now and the end of the season," Spurs manager Martin Jol said.
Defending champion Chelsea leads the league with 79 points, seven more than Manchester United and 12 more than Liverpool.
Sunderland's match with Fulham was abandoned after 21 minutes at the Stadium of Light because of a waterlogged field.
Fulham was leading 1-0 through Brian McBride's ninth-minute goal.
Sunderland has won just two games this season and has 11 points with a month of the season left.
Hearts beat Dunfermline 4-0 to maintain a two-point lead over third-place Rangers. Hearts marked Tynecastle stadium's 120th anniversary with first-half goals by Michal Pospisil, Roman Bednar and Saulius Mikoliunas. Substitute Juho Makela adding a fourth goal with eight minutes left.
Hearts are in second place -- 17 points behind Celtic, which won its fourth eague title in six seasons.
