Jaromir Jagr broke a tie with Hall of Famer Jean Ratelle for the New York Rangers' single-season points record by assisting on four straight goals in a 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders in the NHL on Wednesday.
Drawing chants of "MVP! MVP!" from the many Rangers fans at Nassau Coliseum, Jagr passed Ratelle at 7:23 of the first period, setting up Petr Prucha's power-play goal for point No. 110. Jagr also assisted on Martin Straka's three goals to help the Rangers move four points ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division.
Blair Betts also scored for the Rangers. Alexei Yashin scored his 25th goal for the Islanders, 10 points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
Panthers 5, Penguins 3
At Pittsburgh, Chris Gratton scored his 16th goal to lead Florida to its seventh straight victory.
Five different players scored for the Panthers, who overcame John LeClair's 400th career goal for Pittsburgh.
The Panthers, which are 10-1-1 in their last 12, moved into 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings, six points behind eighth-place Montreal. Nathan Horton, Gary Roberts, Rostislav Olesz and Juraj Kolnik also scored for Florida. Andy Hilbert and Kostantin Koltsov tallied goals for Pittsburgh.
Sabres 4, Bruins 3
At Buffalo, New York, J.P. Dumont scored twice to help Buffalo snap a six-game losing streak.
Chris Drury had a goal and assist while Maxim Afinogenov also scored for Buffalo, which twice squandered one-goal leads in the final 27 minutes. Daniel Briere had three assists and center Tim Connolly set up two in his return to the lineup after missing seven games with a sprained left knee.
Marty Reasoner and David Tanabe had a goal and assist each, and Brad Stuart also scored for the Bruins, who have gone 0-1-6 in their last seven road games, one loss short of matching a season low.
Capitals 5, Hurricanes 1
At Raleigh, North Carolina, rookie Alexander Ovechkin got his 48th goal of the season, Matt Bradley scored twice and backup goaltender Brent Johnson stopped 49 shots to help Washington beat Carolina.
Brian Willsie and Chris Clark also had goals as the Capitals won consecutive games for the first time in three weeks.
Carolina, which clinched a playoff spot on Monday, missed an opportunity to secure the Southeast Division title. Its magic number remains at two points with 10 games left after the third straight loss to Washington, one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference.
Canucks 2, Wild 1
At Vancouver, British Columbia, Anson Carter scored a power-play goal with 6.1 seconds left to give Vancouver a crucial win over Minnesota.
After failing to record even a shot on their first four power plays, Daniel Sedin's pass through the crease left Carter with an open net and he slammed his 30th goal of the season past a helpless Manny Fernandez.
Sedin also scored and Alex Auld finished with 20 saves to help the Canucks win for the fourth time in five games and move into a tie with Anaheim for sixth place in the Western Conference.
