Sweden's Paerson collects Olympic gold at long last

AP , SESTRIERE, ITALY

If the slalom was the last race of the Olympics for Kostelic and Kildow, it might well have been the final race of Kristina Koznick's career. Skiing with a knee ligament "hanging on by, like, a piece of my hair," Koznick did what she could to get down the hill in the first slalom run, more than 3 seconds slower than Paerson, then decided not to try a second run.

Koznick planned to fly to the US yesterday, and have surgery on Monday.

"I wanted the fairy tale," Koznick said, tears welling in her eyes. "I stood up there, and I wanted to walk away with a medal today. I knew I could write a book about it if I did."
