Chaunte Howard, a 22-year-old American and a surprising silver medalist in last year's world outdoor championships, won the women's high jump at 6 feet 4 inches. She missed three times at the meet-record height of 6-5 1/2.
"I was a little nervous at first," Howard said. "When I was in high school, I had a run-in with a wooden track and broke my arm."
