Top western teams fight for victory in a shootout

    AP, DALLAS, TEXAS
    Monday, Jan 30, 2006, Page 8

Mike Modano pounded in a goal in the first extra round of a shootout for the Dallas Stars to beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in a thrilling NHL game between the top two teams in the Western Conference Saturday.

Dallas goalie Marty Turco beat Detroit for the first time in 11 tries.

After two superb periods, Turco had the penalty that led to the Red Wings' lone goal early in the third period. Then, with Dallas leading 2-1 on the third round of the shootout, Turco appeared to have won the game by forcing Henrik Zetterberg to miss wide right but a replay led to him being called for throwing his stick at the puck.

Detroit goalie Manny Legace stopped Antti Miettinen on Dallas' third chance, forcing an extra round. Turco then redeemed himself by popping Robert Lang's shot over the goal and Modano followed with his blistering shot past Legace.

"It comes down to a skills competition and their skill is better than mine," Legace said.

The Stars -- playing their third game in three days -- won their fourth straight, the last three in shootouts. Dallas is a league-best 8-0 in shootouts and has 70 points. The Red Wings, who upped their West-best point total to 71, are 1-1 in shootouts.

Sergei Zubov and Jussi Jokinen also had shootout scores for Dallas. Jokinen is 8-for-8 in shootouts and Zubov 5-for-8.

Jere Lehtinen scored for Dallas in regulation, and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit.
