Stelios Giannakopoulos scored the only goal with a diving header in the 84th minute Saturday to help Bolton knock defending champion Arsenal out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 win.
The loss ended Arsenal's remarkable run in the competition.
The Gunners won the FA Cup three of the previous four seasons and reached the final four times in five years. The loss also came four days after Arsenal lost to Wigan in the League Cup semifinals.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger fielded a weakened team for the visit to Bolton and Giannakopoulos punished some poor defending by heading home a left wing cross from Ricardo Gardner.
Earlier, Frank Lampard's equalizer earned Chelsea a replay in a 1-1 draw with Everton, and League One Brentford upset Sunderland 2-1.
Other Premier League clubs had scares in fourth-round games, with Middlesbrough held 1-1 by Coventry, Birmingham drawing 1-1 with Reading and Charlton needing a last-minute winner to subdue League Two Leyton Orient 2-1.
Looking set to run away with another Premier League title, Chelsea trailed at Goodison Park after James McFadden's header gave the Toffees a halftime lead. But Lampard, who has scored some valuable goals for Chelsea this season, added to his tally with a low shot 17 minutes from the end.
"We were confronted by an Everton side who fought for everything, like they always do on their own ground, so we are happy to accept the result as it is," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said.
Last in the Premier League, Sunderland can now concentrate on survival after the loss at Griffin Park.
Although Julio Arca canceled out Dudley Campbell's earlier strike for the Bees, the Brentford forward struck again with a minute to go.
Middlesbrough went ahead at Coventry through Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, but the League Championship side hit back through Stern John to earn a deserved reply for the Sky Blues.
David Fernandez scored two goals to help Dundee United earn a come-from-behind 3-3 draw against Scottish Premier League leader Celtic.
The draw helped second-place Hearts, which beat Edinburgh neighbor Hibernian 4-1, cut Celtic's lead to eight points.
Celtic appeared to be cruising toward a 19th league victory when goals by John Hartson, Maciej Zurawski and Stilian Petrov opened up a 3-1 lead by the 67th minute at Parkhead.
But Lee Miller replied in the 82nd and Fernandez collected his second of the game with four minutes to go.
There was a minute's silence before the Hearts-Hibs game at Tynecastle as a mark of respect for former Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer, who died two weeks ago. But hundreds of Hibs fans, recalling how Mercer tried to merge the two Edinburgh clubs 16 years ago, turned their back on the tribute.
Hearts, which hasn't won the Scottish title since 1960, raced into a three-goal lead by halftime with two strikes by Paul Hartley and another by Rudolf Skacel.
Hibs had Gary Smith sent off before halftime for elbowing Saulius Mikoliunas, and Calum Elliot added a fourth goal five minutes into the second half.
Also Saturday, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock drew 2-2, Dunfermline and Motherwell finished 1-1 and Falkirk won 1-0 at last-place Livingston.
Defending champion Rangers visits Inverness today.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
