Kapanen hits winning shot in overtime

Sami Kapanen scored in overtime for the second straight game after NHL goal leader Simon Gagne tied it midway through the third period, and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Thursday night.

About 90 seconds into the extra period, Kapanen had a shot blocked by Niclas Wallin, then eluded his defender to corral the rebound and put it past goalie Cam Ward to give the Flyers their sixth straight victory on the road. Kapanen needed only 13 seconds a night earlier in Atlanta to beat the Thrashers.

Gagne tied it with his 27th goal of the season, deflecting a slap shot from Kim Johnsson. Freddy Meyer got his first NHL goal and Brian Savage also scored for the Flyers, 4-0 on their franchise-record 11-game trip.

Matt Cullen had two goals, and Cory Stillman also scored for Carolina.

Penguins 6, Devils 2

In Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby had his second two-goal game in three games and Marc-Andre Fleury made 44 saves to help the Penguins end a six-game losing streak.

Michel Therrien got his first victory as Pittsburgh's coach after 15 days and four consecutive one-goal losses. Tomas Surovy also scored twice, and Ric Jackman and Mark Recchi added goals for the Penguins, who had lost 12 of 13 and were winless since beating Colorado on Dec. 10. Scott Gomez scored twice for New Jersey.

Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3, SO

In Toronto, Alexei Ponikarovsky scored in regulation and again in a shootout to help the Maple Leafs win their fourth straight game.

Mats Sundin also beat Martin Biron in the shootout, and Ponikarovsky gave Toronto the victory after Buffalo's Ales Kotalik and Thomas Vanek failed against Ed Belfour.

Darcy Tucker and Bryan McCabe also scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs. Tim Connolly, Henrick Tallinder and Jason Pominville had goals for Buffalo.

Stars 3, Blues 0

In Dallas, Marty Turco made 17 saves for his third shutout of the season and 24th of his career, and Bill Guerin, Sergei Zubov and Jere Lehtinen had power-play goals for the Stars.

Dallas' penalty-killing unit also was effective, blanking St. Louis on six chances. The Stars haven't given up a power-play goal since Dec. 18, a streak of 36 kills.

Coyotes 6, Kings 5, OT

At Glendale, Arizona, Keith Ballard scored a short-handed goal with 1:08 left in overtime to give Phoenix its second straight victory since coach Wayne Gretzky returned to the team following his mother's death.

Ballard took a deflected clearing pass from Mike Ricci near center ice and fired the puck over Jason LaBarbera's right shoulder for his second goal of the game.

Ladislav Nagy had a goal and three assists for the Coyotes, who beat San Jose 5-4 on the road Wednesday night in Gretzky's first game back. He returned after a 10-day leave of absence to be with his mother, who died of lung cancer Dec. 19.

Paul Mara also scored twice, Mike Comrie had a goal and Shane Doan added three assists. Derek Armstrong had his first career hat trick, and Sean Avery and Michael Cammalleri also scored for LA.

Flames 4, Wild 2

At Calgary, Alberta, Steven Reinprecht and Jason Wiemer scored third-period goals and Miikka Kiprusoff made 32 saves for Calgary.

Tony Amonte and Shean Donovan also scored to help the Flames take a one-point lead over second-place Vancouver in the tight Northwest Division.

Richie Regehr, the younger brother of Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr, picked up an assist on the winning goal in his first NHL game. Kyle Wanvig and Pascal Dupuis scored for Minnesota.

David Bolland, Kyle Chipchura and Luc Bourdon scored in a 1:51 span in the second period to lead Canada to a 4-0 victory over Norway on Thursday night in the world junior hockey championship.

Cam Barker also scored, and Justin Pogge made 13 saves to help the Canadians (3-0) clinch at least second place in Group A in the game slowed by 45 penalties.

Canada will complete round-robin play tonight against the US (2-0). The Americans, 6-5 winners over Finland on Wednesday night, will face Switzerland on Friday night in Vancouver.

The winner of each of the two pools will receive byes into the semifinals, while the two second-place teams will play the third-place teams in the other group in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Norway is 0-3.

In the only other game Thursday night, Nikolai Lemtyugov scored two goals in Russia's 3-1 victory over Latvia in Group B play in Kamloops.

Evgeni Malkin also scored for Russia (3-0) and Semen Varlamov made 19 saves. Jurijs Klujevskis scored for Latvia (0-3).
