Gilberto scored in the final minute of extra time and Arsenal went on to beat third-division Doncaster Rovers on penalties on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals of the English League Cup.
Gilberto's 120th-minute goal tied the match 2-2 and the Gunners, eighth in the Premier League, prevailed 3-1 on penalties to join fellow Premier League sides Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United and Wigan in the final four.
Blackburn won at Middlesbrough 1-0 on Wednesday night on Paul Dickov's 90th-minute goal. On Tuesday, Man Untied won 3-1 at Birmingham and Wigan beat Bolton 2-0 in their quarterfinals.
Wigan will host Arsenal in the mid-January semifinals while Blackburn will be home against Manchester United.
However, the London club fell behind early on Michael McIndoe's fourth-minute goal and didn't equalize until the 63rd on a goal by Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, whose long shot deflected in off Sean Thornton.
Paul Green restored Doncaster's lead in the 14th minute of extra time and, after Gilberto tied it, Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia blocked three penalty attempts to give the Gunners the victory.
