A 46-year-old John McEnroe is planning on playing doubles at the SAP Open in San Jose in February, his first appearance on the ATP tour since 1992.
McEnroe will team with Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman.
McEnroe won 17 Grand Slam titles, including 10 in doubles, before retiring from full-time ATP play after the 1992 season.
"We are coming to play San Jose for one reason -- to win the SAP Open doubles title," McEnroe said in a statement on Thursday. "Jonas and I are not doing this just for fun. We think that this will be great for the game of tennis."
McEnroe won five singles and eight doubles titles in the California tournament. He won 77 career doubles titles, third highest in the Open era.
The event will feature the new doubles scoring the ATP is adopting for next year.
