Michael Owen scored his first goal for Newcastle on Sunday, helping the Magpies to a 3-0 Premier League victory over Blackburn.
Owen's 68th-minute header came five minutes after Alan Shearer had opened the scoring with a free kick.
Newcastle defender Steven Taylor was sent off in the 72nd for a second yellow card.
Newcastle's first win of the season was assured when Charles N'Zogbia added a third goal with five minutes remaining.
"I have no doubt in my mind that I will score goals and I hope there are more important ones to come, but the relief for me is getting the first three points because we badly needed them and hopefully we can go on a run now," Owen said.
Also Sunday, Liverpool kept its fourth straight league clean sheet on Sunday, playing a 0-0 draw with Manchester United. Wigan drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough and Bolton won 1-0 at Manchester City. On Monday, Arsenal hosts Everton.
Owen joined Newcastle on Aug. 31 on a four-year deal. Sunday was Newcastle's first win in five league games.
At Anfield, the match had plenty of passion but few chances on target.
It was the first 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Liverpool since 1991.
"It was maybe the intensity of the game, I don't know, but you could see 0-0 written all over it from early on," Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said.
"I thought we had enough of the ball to win it. We just lacked a cutting edge."
Liverpool has only scored one league goal this season, with Benitez preferring a more defensively minded style.
"If we can carry on playing at the same level, it will mean we have moved a step higher than we were last season but we will need to see how we go against Chelsea and Arsenal before we can judge," Benitez said.
United captain Roy Keane broke a bone in his left foot in a late challenge from Luis Garcia and will be sidelined for up to two months.
Bolton won with an injury-time penalty from Gary Speed, earned when Richard Dunne handled Henrik Pedersen's chip into the area.
City dominated the match but Bolton 'keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen stopped two shots from Antoine Sibierski, Kiki Musampa hit the post twice and Sun Jihai hit the crossbar.
Henri Camara came off the bench to earn to Wigan a point against Middlesbrough. His 68th-minute equalizer canceled out Aiyegbeni Yakubu's 14th-minute strike.
In the Football League Championship, Norwich beat Ipswich 1-0 and Derby drew 2-2 with Southampton. Sheffield United lead the standings with 24 points, followed by Reading with 20 and Watford and Luton with 17.
Stilian Petrov's fifth-minute goal gave Celtic a 1-0 win over Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League.
Petrov took a pass from Shunsuke Nakamura to shoot by Hibernian goalkeeper Zbigniew Malkowski.
Celtic has 16 points, five points behind surprise leader Hearts after seven matches. Rangers is third with 13 points.
"Hibs played excellent and it would be very unfair to say we deserved to win," Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said. "As I've been saying all along, the Scottish league is decent, there are good players and teams in the league, and this is a hard place to come to and win."
Fernando Torres and Mateja Kezman scored a goal each to give Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win over defending champion FC Barcelona.
Barcelona took the lead in the sixth minute when Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o tapped in after a mix-up in Atletico's defense.
Eleven minutes later, Bulgaria forward Martin Petrov raced through the Barcelona midfield with an explosive burst of speed to supply a perfect cross for Atletico striker Fernando Torres, who headed into the net at Vicente Calderon Stadium.
Kezman added the second in the 51st minute off a corner.
Atletico continued to pressure and Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes was forced to make several saves, including two in the 64th.
Defender Pablo Ibanez was given a straight red card for a hard tackle on Eto'o.
Real Madrid also lost, falling 1-0 at Espanyol after defender Daniel Jarque scored the only goal.
Jarque raced forward to meet a free kick by Ivan de La Pena and referee Rodriguez Santiago appeared to blow his whistle for a penalty against the Madrid defense. But when Santiago saw the ball hit the back of the net he signaled a goal.
Santiago was then surrounded by Madrid players claiming the goal should be disallowed because the whistle had been blown before the ball crossed the goal line.
Madrid became more ragged after the goal, and in the 88th minute Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was ejected for a second yellow card.
Schalke was held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Hertha Berlin, keeping the team from winning its fourth straight match.
Schalke, expected to battle Bayern Munich for the title this season, turned in another poor performance against a sixth-place team that was down to 10 men after a 26th-minute ejection.
"The expectations are high here, but the reality looks different," Schalke goalkeeper Frank Rost said.
Also, former Germany coach Rudi Voeller made a successful debut as interim coach of Bayer Leverkusen, beating Duisburg 3-1.
For the second straight year, Schalke spent the most on new players in the Bundesliga, but the squad hasn't jelled.
Berlin controlled the match with the best early chances in front of 60,740 spectators at AufSchalke Arena. In the 10th minute, Marcelhino's free kick slipped through Rost's legs, but the 'keeper grabbed the ball before it crossed the line.
Berlin's dominance ended with the ejection of Brazilian midfielder Gilberto, who clapped at the referee while receiving a yellow card.
The draw left Schalke in fourth, six points behind Bayern after five rounds, and its likely to increase the pressure on coach Ralf Rangnick.
"The criticism is grotesque," Rangnick said, pointing out he led Schalke from a relegation spot to the Champions League last season.
Leverkusen ended its worst start in 23 years under Voeller, who lead Germany to the 2002 World Cup final and replaced Klaus Augenthaler on Friday.
Against the worst defensive team in the league, Leverkusen overcame a 31st-minute goal by Klemen Lavric to win.
Juan leveled on a header six minutes later, followed by scores from forward Dimitar Berbatov in the 41st and Athirson a minute from end.
Voeller, Leverkusen's sports director, said he had no plans to stay on as coach.
"This assignment will be short-lived," he said.
Leverkusen moved to seventh, while Duisburg tumbled into the relegation zone in 16th place.
Alessandro Del Piero scored two goals in his first start of the season, a 2-1 win over Ascoli that put Juventus into sole possession of first place in the Serie A after three matches.
Del Piero, reduced to a bench role by coach Fabio Capello in the first two games, converted a penalty in the 13th minute and then scored the match-winner in the 39th on a free kick. Ascoli defender Alfredo Cariello had equalized in the 32nd.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
