Journalist's report ends abruptly as he dies in car crash

A Colombian radio journalist was killed on Wednesday while reporting live on a cycling race when his car crashed on a sharp mountain bend, RCN radio said.

Alberto Martinez, 50, was standing in the back of a convertible with a microphone in hand watching riders compete in the Tour de Colombia when the car's brakes apparently failed and the vehicle hit a side barrier before flipping over. Two other reporters in the car, a radio technician and the driver were injured and rushed to a hospital, RCN said in a statement.

"The pair riding out front are heading for the final stage ... it's [cyclist Mauricio] Soler, Soler!'' were Martinez's final words before a loud bang is heard.

Martinez was a veteran sports reporter who had covered Once Caldas' victory in the Copa Libertadores soccer tournament last year and other major South American events.
