Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva was upset by Japan's Akiko Morigami 6-3, 6-2 Thursday in the Cincinnati Women's Open.
Morigami will meet Sania Mirza on Friday in the quarterfinals of the US$170,000 Tier III tournament. Mirza, who beat Morigami in the first round at Wimbledon, defeated Puerto Rico's Kristina Brandi 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Third-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia also advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Austrian qualifier Sybille Bammer.

Qualifier Bethanie Mattek advanced when France's Camille Pin retired with a sore throat early in the second set. Mattek, the lone remaining American in the tournament, was leading 6-3, 2-0 at the time. Pin also retired from last year's Cincinnati tournament in the first round with a heat-related illness.
Two-time defending champion Andy Roddick recorded his 12th consecutive victory, advancing into the quarterfinals along with three other Americans at the Indinapolis Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Roddick beat Israel's Noam Okun, 6-3, 6-3 in the evening feature match.

"I'm surprised we didn't get rained on," said Roddick, who converted three of his five break points and saved the only one he faced.
Weather conditions changed rapidly during the 68-minute match in which Roddick had nine aces to add to his tour-leading total of 590.
"At the beginning [of the match] it was like a sauna. It was so hot and humid. Then there was a cool breeze and I saw some clouds," he said.
Roddick joined No. 4-seed Taylor Dent, Robby Ginepri and Paul Goldstein in advancing to the next round.
French Open champion Rafael Nadal beat doubles partner Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2 to run his winning streak on clay to 31 matches.
Top-seeded Nadal, cheered nonstop by 5,500 spectators, needed three match points to finish his Spanish countryman and reach the quarterfinals.
"I was aggressive, I played nearly perfectly today," Nadal said. "It was one of my best matches in weeks."
Unbeaten on clay since April, Nadal tied three other players -- including Bjorn Borg -- for the sixth longest winning streak on the dirt. Guillermo Vilas holds the record of 53 from 1977.
Nadal said he felt little pressure to try and win his sixth straight tournament on clay and eighth overall this season -- which would tie him with top-ranked Roger Federer for the ATP tour high.
Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta overcame Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday and remained on course to reach the Palermo International final for a second straight year.
Pennetta rallied from 6-1, 3-0 down to put three Italians in the quarterfinals of a tournament never won by a local player.
Pennetta will next face countrywoman Roberta Vinci.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
