Nicky Hayden led from the start and beat fellow American Colin Edwards to win the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, his first MotoGP victory in 38 tries and the first US rider to win on the world circuit in five years.
Hayden celebrated the win before a sun-soaked crowd of 57,000 at Laguna Seca Raceway by taking his father Earl along for the victory lap on the back of his Honda holding an American flag.
"This feels so good," said Hayden, who was never seriously challenged. "I got a good start, I kept my head down and never let up. Thanks to the team for believing in me, thanks to my mom and dad and thanks to all the fans, waving and cheering me on, they gave me something I ll never forget."
